Job Description

Proofreader — Job Description Template

Freelance-friendly proofreader JD covering mechanical accuracy, style-sheet adherence, and typical turnaround.

About the role

We hire proofreaders on a freelance basis for final-pass work on pieces that have already been through copy editing. Your job is to catch what others missed: typos, inconsistencies, layout-induced errors, dropped words, formatting glitches.

What you'll do

  • Proofread 3–10 pieces per week, typically 500–3,000 words each
  • Turn pieces around in 24 hours or less (rush work billed at 1.5x)
  • Work from PDF proofs and, occasionally, InDesign markup
  • Flag inconsistencies against our style sheet

Required skills

  • Proven proofreading track record at a publication, imprint, or agency
  • Familiarity with BS 5261 proofreading marks (UK) or equivalent US conventions
  • Reliability with tight turnaround

How we assess

Candidates complete a paid test proofread (90 minutes, £50 / $60) plus an EditingTests.com proofreading assessment. Candidates who pass both enter our freelance pool.
