The gold standard for editorial talent assessment

For 28 years, EditingTests.com has helped publishers, legal firms, media groups and corporate communications teams hire editorial talent with confidence — using rigorous, defensible, bias-free assessments.

Our story

EditingTests.com was founded in 1998 with a simple premise: editorial hiring deserved better than gut instinct and CV scanning. At the time, there was no structured, standardised way for publishers and media companies to assess whether a candidate could actually do the job — edit copy to a professional standard, spot errors under pressure, command the vocabulary of a specialist field.

We built the first version of the platform for a handful of UK publishing clients. Over the following decade, demand grew across academic publishing, legal publishing, corporate communications and global media. The 130,000-candidate milestone passed quietly in 2024 — we marked it the same way we mark everything: by improving the tests.

Today, EditingTests.com offers seven distinct assessment products — including the world's only Industry Vocabulary Test covering 3,800+ specialist fields — and serves clients across every English-language publishing market.

Our mission

To make editorial hiring defensible, fast and fair — for every type of organisation, at every scale.

We believe that every candidate deserves to be assessed on what they can actually do, not how their CV reads. And every hiring team deserves data they can stand behind — in front of candidates, legal teams, and internal stakeholders.

What makes us different

Editorial-only focus

We do one thing: assess editorial skills. Every product, every feature, every update is designed for publishers, legal teams and communications departments — not adapted from a general-purpose platform.

Ecological validity

Our Track Changes editing environment mirrors the tools candidates actually use at work. They perform better because the context is familiar. You get better signal as a result.

Percentile benchmarking

Every result is benchmarked against our candidate database — the largest editorial-specific dataset in existence. You know not just whether a candidate passed, but how they compare.

Pricing transparency

One credit per candidate. Any test. No subscription. Credits never expire. We have never changed this model.
