anastomotic leak

Postoperative complication involving breakdown or inadequate healing of surgically joined bowel segments.

Full Definition

Anastomotic leak is a serious postoperative complication characterized by breakdown or inadequate healing at the site where bowel segments have been surgically joined. This complication can result in peritonitis, sepsis, abscess formation, or fistula development. Clinical presentation may include fever, abdominal pain, leukocytosis, or drainage of bowel contents. Diagnosis often requires imaging studies and may necessitate reoperation. Risk factors include poor tissue perfusion, tension at the anastomosis, infection, and patient comorbidities. Documentation should include grading of severity and management approach.
