Fascial dehiscence is the partial or complete separation of the fascial layer closure following abdominal surgery. This serious complication can occur due to technical factors (suture technique, material), patient factors (infection, malnutrition, increased abdominal pressure), or excessive strain on the repair. Unlike superficial wound dehiscence, fascial dehiscence involves the deep structural layer and may lead to evisceration if the overlying skin also opens. Risk factors include emergency surgery, infection, obesity, and chronic disease. Management often requires return to the operating room for re-closure with reinforcement techniques.
