FAST is a rapid bedside ultrasound examination performed in trauma patients to detect free fluid (typically blood) in the abdomen and pericardium. The examination includes four standard views: right upper quadrant, left upper quadrant, pelvis, and subxiphoid cardiac window. Extended FAST (eFAST) includes bilateral thoracic views to assess for pneumothorax. This non-invasive diagnostic tool helps guide urgent surgical decision-making in unstable trauma patients. A positive FAST in an unstable patient often indicates the need for immediate surgical intervention.
