Insufflation is the process of introducing gas, typically carbon dioxide, into body cavities to create working space during minimally invasive surgical procedures. In laparoscopic surgery, abdominal insufflation creates pneumoperitoneum, elevating the abdominal wall and separating organs to improve visualization and instrument manipulation. The procedure requires careful monitoring of intra-abdominal pressure (typically 12-15 mmHg) to prevent complications such as decreased venous return, elevated diaphragm, or gas embolism. CO2 is preferred because it dissolves rapidly in blood and is eliminated through respiration, reducing the risk of complications compared to air insufflation.
