The Drug Addiction Treatment Act (DATA) waiver, commonly called X-waiver or DATA-waiver, was federal certification that allowed qualified physicians to prescribe Schedule III-V controlled substances like buprenorphine for opioid addiction treatment outside of OTPs. Physicians needed special training and registration with the DEA. This waiver system was eliminated in 2023, but the term remains relevant in historical documentation and some current contexts.
