PHP

Also written as: PHP — Partial Hospitalization Program

Partial Hospitalization Program - a day treatment program providing intensive therapeutic services for several hours daily while patients return home nightly.

Full Definition

Partial Hospitalization Programs provide the most intensive level of outpatient care, typically offering 6-8 hours of structured treatment daily, five to seven days per week. PHPs serve patients who require intensive medical and psychiatric monitoring but do not need 24-hour residential care. Programming includes individual and group therapy, medication management, psychiatric services, and case management. PHPs often serve as step-down care from inpatient treatment or as an alternative to hospitalization for patients with complex co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish clearly from IOP in treatment level documentation.
