therapeutic community

Also written as: TC

Residential treatment model using peer support and community living as primary therapeutic tools.

Full Definition

A therapeutic community is a structured residential treatment environment where the community itself serves as the primary method of treatment. Residents participate in all aspects of daily operations, from cooking and cleaning to group therapy and conflict resolution. The model emphasizes personal responsibility, mutual self-help, and social learning. Treatment typically lasts 6-18 months and includes hierarchical levels of responsibility as residents progress. This approach has particular effectiveness for individuals with severe substance use disorders and co-occurring antisocial behaviors.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from 'halfway house' or 'sober living' - therapeutic communities are active treatment environments, not transitional housing.

In Context

  • "The therapeutic community reported a 65% completion rate for its 12-month program." — treatment outcome report
