constitutional delay

Normal variant of pubertal timing where adolescents experience delayed but ultimately normal sexual maturation.

Full Definition

Constitutional delay of growth and puberty (CDGP) is a benign condition representing the extreme end of normal pubertal timing, where adolescents experience delayed onset of puberty but eventually achieve normal sexual maturation and final adult height. This condition is more common in males and often has a familial pattern. Adolescents with constitutional delay typically have delayed bone age, slower growth velocity, and later onset of secondary sexual characteristics compared to peers. The primary challenges are psychosocial, as affected teens may experience anxiety, social isolation, or academic difficulties due to physical immaturity relative to classmates.

Usage note: Do not capitalize 'constitutional' unless beginning a sentence.
