gender dysphoria

Clinically significant distress caused by incongruence between experienced gender identity and assigned sex, often emerging during adolescence.

Full Definition

Gender dysphoria is a diagnostic category referring to the psychological distress that may result from incongruence between an individual's experienced or expressed gender and their assigned sex at birth. In adolescent populations, gender dysphoria may emerge or intensify during puberty as secondary sexual characteristics develop. Clinical assessment requires careful evaluation of the persistence, consistency, and insistence of gender identity, while distinguishing between gender dysphoria and gender nonconformity without distress. Treatment approaches are individualized and may include social transition, psychological support, family therapy, and medical interventions such as pubertal suppression or hormone therapy.
