LGBTQ+ youth

Also written as: LGBTQ+ — Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Plus

Adolescents who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or other sexual and gender minorities, requiring specialized healthcare considerations.

Full Definition

LGBTQ+ youth refers to adolescents and young people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, or other sexual and gender minorities. In adolescent healthcare, this population faces unique challenges including higher rates of mental health issues, substance use, and suicidality. Healthcare providers must be trained in culturally competent care, understanding of gender-affirming treatments, and awareness of legal and ethical considerations regarding confidentiality and family involvement in care decisions.
