sexual maturity rating

Clinical assessment scale used to document pubertal development stages, also known as Tanner staging.

Full Definition

Sexual maturity rating (SMR) is a standardized clinical tool used to assess and document the progression of pubertal development in adolescents. The scale rates development from stage 1 (prepubertal) to stage 5 (adult) for breast development and pubic hair growth in females, and genital development and pubic hair growth in males. SMR assessment helps clinicians determine appropriate timing for various health interventions, evaluate concerns about delayed or precocious puberty, and provide anticipatory guidance. Documentation of SMR is essential for adolescent health records and helps track normal versus abnormal pubertal progression.

Usage

Usage note: Use 'sexual maturity rating' or 'SMR' in formal documentation; 'Tanner staging' is also acceptable.
