Full Definition
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a serious psychiatric condition affecting 1-2% of adolescents, characterized by excessive concern about imagined or minor physical defects that are not observable to others. Adolescents with BDD often engage in repetitive behaviors such as mirror checking, excessive grooming, or seeking reassurance about their appearance. The disorder can significantly impair academic, social, and family functioning and is associated with increased risk of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. Early recognition and treatment with cognitive-behavioral therapy and sometimes medication can improve outcomes.
Usage
Usage note: Not capitalized unless beginning a sentence. BDD is an acceptable abbreviation after first use.
