gynecomastia
Pronunciation: guy-nuh-koh-MAS-tee-uh
Benign enlargement of breast tissue in males, commonly occurring during adolescence due to hormonal changes.
Full Definition
Gynecomastia is a normal variant of male pubertal development affecting up to 65% of adolescent boys, typically appearing between ages 10-16 years. The condition results from an imbalance between estrogen and androgen levels during puberty and usually resolves spontaneously within 1-2 years. While generally benign, persistent or severe gynecomastia may require evaluation to exclude underlying endocrine disorders, medication effects, or rarely, malignancy. The condition can cause significant psychological distress in affected adolescents.
Usage
Usage note: Not capitalized unless beginning a sentence. Distinguish from pseudogynecomastia (fat deposition) in clinical documentation.
