non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction

Also written as: NSTEMI — Non-ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction

A type of heart attack characterized by elevated cardiac biomarkers without ST-segment elevation on electrocardiogram.

Full Definition

Non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) is a form of acute coronary syndrome where myocardial necrosis occurs due to coronary artery occlusion or severe stenosis, but without the characteristic ST-segment elevation seen on electrocardiogram. Diagnosis requires elevated cardiac troponin levels along with clinical evidence of myocardial ischemia. NSTEMI typically results from subtotal occlusion of a coronary artery, often due to plaque rupture with subsequent thrombus formation. The management approach differs from STEMI, usually involving early invasive strategy rather than immediate primary percutaneous coronary intervention.

Usage

Usage note: Use hyphens in the full term; acronym NSTEMI does not require periods between letters.
