An ultrasound imaging technique performed by inserting a probe into the esophagus to obtain detailed images of cardiac structures.

Full Definition

Transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) is an advanced cardiac imaging modality that provides high-resolution ultrasound images of the heart by placing an ultrasound transducer in the esophagus, directly behind the heart. This approach eliminates interference from lung tissue and chest wall structures that can limit transthoracic imaging. TEE is particularly valuable for evaluating valvular disease, detecting cardiac masses, assessing for endocarditis, guiding interventional procedures, and evaluating the left atrial appendage for thrombus. The procedure requires conscious sedation and carries slightly higher risks than standard echocardiography due to the need for esophageal intubation.
