Abnormal increase in white blood cells in cerebrospinal fluid, indicating inflammation or infection.

Full Definition

CSF pleocytosis refers to an elevated white blood cell count in cerebrospinal fluid above the normal range of 0-5 cells per microlitre. This finding indicates inflammation within the central nervous system and can result from various pathological processes including bacterial, viral, or fungal infections, autoimmune conditions, or malignancy. The cellular composition (lymphocytic versus neutrophilic predominance) provides important diagnostic clues about the underlying aetiology. Lymphocytic pleocytosis suggests viral infections or chronic inflammatory conditions, while neutrophilic pleocytosis indicates acute bacterial infection.
