Full Definition

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a specialized magnetic resonance imaging technique that provides information about the microstructural organization of white matter by measuring the diffusion of water molecules along nerve fiber bundles. DTI can detect subtle changes in white matter integrity that may not be visible on conventional MRI, making it valuable for research and clinical assessment of conditions affecting white matter tracts, such as traumatic brain injury and neurodegenerative diseases.

Usage note: Often abbreviated as DTI; distinct from standard diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI).
