Graphesthesia is a form of cortical sensory function that involves the recognition of letters, numbers, or simple geometric shapes traced on the skin surface, usually on the palm of the hand or fingertips. This test assesses the integrity of the posterior parietal cortex and its connections, particularly the postcentral gyrus and superior parietal lobule. Impaired graphesthesia (agraphesthesia) suggests dysfunction in cortical sensory processing areas and is often tested alongside other cortical sensory functions such as two-point discrimination and stereognosis. The test requires intact primary sensation and higher-order cortical processing capabilities.
