hydrocephalus

Abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within the brain's ventricular system causing increased intracranial pressure.

Full Definition

Hydrocephalus is a condition characterized by excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain's ventricular system, resulting in ventricular enlargement and increased intracranial pressure. It can be classified as communicating (normal CSF flow but impaired absorption) or non-communicating (obstructed CSF flow). Hydrocephalus may be congenital or acquired, and can present with symptoms including headache, gait disturbance, cognitive impairment, and in infants, macrocephaly.
