Full Definition

Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring involves the continuous measurement of pressure within the cranial vault, typically used in patients with traumatic brain injury, stroke, or other conditions that may cause elevated ICP. Monitoring can be performed using various devices including intraventricular catheters, intraparenchymal monitors, or subdural/epidural sensors. Normal ICP ranges from 5-15 mmHg, and sustained elevations above 20-25 mmHg require immediate intervention.
