Positron emission tomography (PET) is a nuclear medicine imaging technique that uses positron-emitting radiopharmaceuticals to visualize metabolic processes in the brain. Common tracers include fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) for glucose metabolism and specific ligands for neurotransmitter systems or protein aggregates. In neurology, PET scanning aids in diagnosing dementia, evaluating seizure foci, assessing brain tumors, and research into neurodegenerative diseases. The technique provides functional information complementing structural imaging from CT or MRI.
