proprioception

The unconscious awareness of body position and limb location in space, mediated by specialized receptors in muscles, joints, and tendons.

Full Definition

Proprioception is the sensory modality that provides information about the position and movement of body parts without relying on visual input. It involves specialized mechanoreceptors in muscles (muscle spindles), tendons (Golgi tendon organs), and joint capsules that detect changes in muscle length, tension, and joint position. This information travels through the dorsal columns of the spinal cord to reach the brainstem and thalamus before projecting to the somatosensory cortex. Proprioceptive testing involves assessing joint position sense and vibration sense. Impaired proprioception leads to sensory ataxia and can result from peripheral neuropathy, dorsal column lesions, or parietal cortex damage.
