Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) is a nuclear imaging technique that uses gamma-emitting radiopharmaceuticals to assess cerebral blood flow and regional brain function. Common tracers include technetium-99m HMPAO for perfusion studies and DaTscan for dopamine transporter imaging. SPECT provides functional information about brain activity and is particularly valuable in evaluating dementia, movement disorders, epilepsy, and psychiatric conditions. Unlike PET, SPECT uses longer-lived isotopes and is more widely available, though it offers lower spatial resolution.
