Full Definition

Video-EEG monitoring is a specialized diagnostic technique that combines continuous electroencephalography with synchronized video recording to capture and analyze seizure events or other paroxysmal neurological phenomena. This monitoring is typically performed in dedicated epilepsy monitoring units (EMUs) and can last from hours to several days. The simultaneous recording allows clinicians to correlate electrical brain activity with clinical behaviors, helping to distinguish epileptic seizures from non-epileptic events, localize seizure onset zones for surgical planning, and characterize seizure semiology. Patients may have their antiepileptic medications reduced to increase the likelihood of capturing typical events during the monitoring period.
