Deep tendon reflexes, neurological tests used to assess the integrity of the nervous system in psychiatric patients.

Full Definition

Deep tendon reflexes (DTRs) are involuntary muscle contractions elicited by tapping specific tendons with a reflex hammer. In psychiatric settings, DTR assessment is particularly important when evaluating patients on medications that may affect neurological function, such as lithium, anticonvulsants, or antipsychotics. Abnormal DTRs can indicate neurological complications, drug toxicity, or underlying medical conditions that may be contributing to psychiatric symptoms. DTRs are typically graded on a scale from 0 (absent) to 4+ (hyperactive with clonus), with 2+ being normal.
