flight of ideas

A thought disorder characterized by rapid succession of ideas with logical connections, commonly seen in manic episodes.

Full Definition

Flight of ideas is a formal thought disorder characterized by an accelerated flow of thought with rapid, continuous verbalization or speech. Unlike loose associations, the connections between ideas remain logical, though they may be superficial or based on sound similarities (clang associations). This symptom is most commonly observed during manic or hypomanic episodes in bipolar disorder but can also occur in other conditions such as ADHD, substance intoxication, or severe anxiety. The rapid pace of thought often makes it difficult for patients to complete their intended communication, and listeners may struggle to follow the rapid shifts in topic.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from 'loose associations' where logical connections are absent.
