This field studies genetic polymorphisms affecting drug-metabolizing enzymes (particularly cytochrome P450), neurotransmitter receptors, and drug transporters. Clinical applications include genetic testing to guide medication selection, predict adverse reactions, and optimize dosing for psychotropic drugs. Common tests examine CYP2D6 and CYP2C19 enzyme variants that affect metabolism of antidepressants, antipsychotics, and other psychiatric medications, potentially improving treatment outcomes while reducing trial-and-error prescribing.
