schizoaffective disorder

A chronic mental health condition characterized by symptoms of both schizophrenia and major mood disorders occurring concurrently and independently.

Full Definition

Schizoaffective disorder is a psychiatric condition that combines features of schizophrenia (hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking) with major mood episodes (depression or mania). The distinguishing feature is that psychotic symptoms must occur for at least two weeks in the absence of prominent mood symptoms, differentiating it from mood disorders with psychotic features. The disorder has two subtypes: bipolar type (including manic episodes) and depressive type (only major depressive episodes). Schizoaffective disorder requires careful differential diagnosis and typically involves long-term treatment with both antipsychotic and mood-stabilizing medications.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify subtype (bipolar or depressive) when diagnosing schizoaffective disorder.
