thought broadcasting
A delusion in which patients believe their thoughts can be heard or perceived by others without verbal expression.
Full Definition
Thought broadcasting is a specific type of delusion in which individuals believe that their thoughts are being transmitted or broadcast to others, who can then hear or perceive these thoughts without any verbal communication. This symptom is considered a first-rank symptom of schizophrenia according to Schneider's criteria and represents a significant break from reality involving thought possession and control. Patients may believe their thoughts are being broadcast through television, radio, telepathy, or other means. This delusion often causes significant distress and social withdrawal, as patients may become reluctant to think certain thoughts or may isolate themselves to prevent others from 'hearing' their thoughts.
Usage
Usage note: Distinguish from other thought disturbances; document patient's exact description when possible.
