cardiac MRI

Magnetic resonance imaging specifically adapted for cardiac evaluation, providing detailed assessment of structure, function, and tissue characterization.

Full Definition

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (cardiac MRI or CMR) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency pulses to generate detailed images of cardiac anatomy, function, and tissue composition. This modality is considered the gold standard for measuring ventricular volumes and ejection fraction due to its high spatial and temporal resolution. Cardiac MRI can assess myocardial perfusion, detect scar tissue through late gadolinium enhancement, evaluate cardiomyopathies, and characterize congenital heart disease. The technique requires specialized pulse sequences, cardiac gating, and often gadolinium-based contrast agents for comprehensive evaluation.

Usage

Usage note: Use CMR as acceptable abbreviation; specify contrast use when relevant.
