coronary angiography

Invasive imaging procedure using contrast dye and X-rays to visualize coronary arteries and detect stenoses or occlusions.

Full Definition

Coronary angiography is an invasive diagnostic procedure that involves injection of iodinated contrast material into the coronary arteries through cardiac catheterization to visualize the coronary circulation. This gold-standard technique provides detailed assessment of coronary anatomy, identifies the location and severity of stenoses, and guides revascularization decisions. The procedure is performed via femoral, radial, or brachial arterial access and typically includes left and right coronary system evaluation from multiple projections. Modern techniques may incorporate fractional flow reserve measurement and intravascular imaging for enhanced lesion assessment.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from non-invasive coronary CT angiography in reports.
