LVOT

Pronunciation: L-V-O-T

Also written as: LVOT — left ventricular outflow tract

Left ventricular outflow tract; the pathway from the left ventricle to the aorta, commonly assessed for obstruction.

Full Definition

The left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) is the anatomical region extending from the left ventricular cavity beneath the aortic valve to the aortic valve annulus. In cardiac imaging, LVOT assessment is critical for detecting obstruction (as in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy), calculating stroke volume, and evaluating aortic valve disease. Doppler echocardiography measures LVOT velocity and diameter to calculate cardiac output and assess for dynamic obstruction, particularly during stress testing.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify whether referring to LVOT diameter, velocity, or obstruction for clarity.

In Context

  • "Peak LVOT velocity was 4.2 m/s, suggesting dynamic outflow obstruction." — Echocardiography report
  • "LVOT diameter measurement is essential for accurate stroke volume calculation." — Echo protocol manual
