Baseline T1 relaxation time measurement of myocardial tissue before contrast administration, used to detect diffuse myocardial fibrosis and infiltrative disease.

Full Definition

Native T1 refers to the intrinsic T1 relaxation time of myocardial tissue measured without contrast enhancement agents. This quantitative MRI parameter provides information about tissue composition and can detect subtle changes in myocardial structure before they become apparent on conventional imaging. Elevated native T1 values may indicate edema, inflammation, or protein deposition, while reduced values can suggest iron overload or lipid infiltration. Native T1 mapping is particularly valuable for diagnosing cardiac amyloidosis, Anderson-Fabry disease, and monitoring cardiotoxicity from chemotherapy.
