Short tau inversion recovery (STIR) is a specialized MRI pulse sequence that nulls the signal from fat tissue by exploiting its T1 relaxation characteristics. In cardiac imaging, STIR sequences are particularly valuable for detecting myocardial edema, inflammation, and infiltrative processes. The technique enhances contrast between normal myocardium and pathologic tissue by suppressing the bright signal from epicardial and intramyocardial fat. STIR imaging is commonly used in protocols for suspected myocarditis, cardiac sarcoidosis, and acute coronary syndromes.
