Ablative Laser Resurfacing

A laser procedure that removes the outer layers of skin to treat wrinkles, scars, and pigmentation by stimulating dermal remodelling and collagen production.

Ablative laser resurfacing uses high-energy laser wavelengths—most commonly the CO₂ (10,600 nm) or Er:YAG (2,940 nm) laser—to vaporise the epidermis and superficial dermis, triggering a wound-healing response that leads to new collagen formation and skin tightening. It is distinguished from non-ablative and fractional techniques by the complete removal of the treated tissue column. Recovery involves a prolonged downtime with erythema, crusting, and risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly in higher Fitzpatrick types. Editors should note the correct hyphenation: 'ablative' modifies 'laser resurfacing' as a unit, but 'laser resurfacing' itself does not require a hyphen unless used as a compound modifier. The abbreviation 'ALR' is seen in some clinical texts but is not universally standardised.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish clearly from 'fractional laser resurfacing' and 'non-ablative laser resurfacing' in all documents; these are distinct procedures with different risk profiles. Do not use 'laser peel' as a synonym in clinical writing.
