Aesthetic Nurse Prescriber

Also written as: ANP — Aesthetic Nurse Prescriber

A registered nurse with an independent prescribing qualification who is legally authorised to prescribe prescription-only medicines, including certain injectable aesthetics, within their scope of practice.

Full Definition

An Aesthetic Nurse Prescriber (ANP) is a registered nurse who has completed an accredited independent prescribing programme, enabling them to assess, diagnose (within scope), and prescribe prescription-only medicines (POMs) — including Botulinum Toxin preparations — without a supervising physician cosigning each prescription. In editorial contexts, the title is clinically and legally significant because in many jurisdictions the prescribing status of the practitioner affects the legality of the treatment described in patient documentation and clinical papers. Editors must not abbreviate this title to 'nurse injector' or 'aesthetic nurse' without the author's confirmation, as these terms do not carry prescribing authority connotations. The abbreviation ANP is acceptable after first full use but must be disambiguated from 'Advanced Nurse Practitioner,' which has different scope and training requirements in some healthcare systems.

Usage

Usage note: Disambiguate 'ANP' from 'Advanced Nurse Practitioner' at first use in any document where both could appear; the two roles differ in prescribing scope and regulatory framework.

In Context

  • "The clinic's Aesthetic Nurse Prescriber (ANP) independently issued the prescription for botulinum toxin following a thorough patient assessment." — Practice clinical governance document
  • "The editor queried whether 'nurse injector' in the manuscript should be replaced with 'Aesthetic Nurse Prescriber,' as the described practitioner clearly held independent prescribing status." — Manuscript editorial query
