Hyaluronidase

An enzyme used in aesthetic medicine to dissolve hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers, employed both as an emergency reversal agent for vascular complications and as a correction tool for aesthetic overcorrection.

Full Definition

Hyaluronidase catalyses the hydrolysis of hyaluronic acid, making it the primary pharmacological agent for reversing hyaluronic acid filler treatments. In emergencies—particularly vascular occlusion with risk of skin necrosis—rapid administration of hyaluronidase is considered standard of care. It is also used electively to dissolve unevenly placed or excessive filler. Editors should note that 'hyaluronidase' is the International Non-proprietary Name (INN); brand names such as Hyalase should not be used generically. The term should not be hyphenated.
