A microscopic column of thermally ablated or coagulated tissue created by fractional laser or energy-based devices, surrounded by intact tissue that facilitates rapid healing.

Full Definition

A microthermal zone (MTZ) is the fundamental treatment unit produced by fractional photothermolysis technology, in which a focused laser or energy beam creates a narrow, deep column of thermally damaged tissue while leaving surrounding skin intact. This pattern of targeted injury followed by preservation of normal tissue enables faster healing compared with fully ablative resurfacing. The density, depth, and diameter of MTZs can be adjusted to tailor treatment intensity. Editors should note that the term is often abbreviated to MTZ in clinical and research literature; on first use, the full form should always be given. The plural is 'microthermal zones' (not 'microthermal zone's').
