Non-ablative Laser

A laser modality that delivers energy to the dermis to stimulate collagen production without removing or vaporising the overlying epidermal tissue.

Full Definition

Non-ablative lasers work by heating the dermal layer to a threshold that triggers a wound-healing collagen response while leaving the epidermis structurally intact. Common non-ablative platforms include 1064 nm Nd:YAG, 1320 nm Nd:YAG, 1550 nm erbium-doped fibre, and 1540 nm erbium glass lasers. They offer shorter downtime compared to ablative modalities but generally require multiple treatment sessions to achieve comparable results. In editorial work, 'non-ablative' must be hyphenated when used as a compound modifier and must not be confused with 'ablative laser resurfacing', which removes epidermal tissue. Fractional variants should be specified as 'non-ablative fractional laser'.

Usage note: Always hyphenate 'non-ablative'. Clearly distinguish from ablative laser procedures in documents where both are discussed.
