Superficial Fat Compartment

One of the anatomically discrete, encapsulated subcutaneous fat units of the face that undergo independent volume changes with ageing.

The face is divided into multiple distinct fat compartments separated by fibrous septa, broadly categorised as superficial (above the superficial musculoaponeurotic system) and deep (beneath it). Superficial fat compartments include the nasolabial, orbital, medial cheek, middle cheek, and lateral temporal-cheek compartments, among others. Their independent behaviour during ageing — including differential atrophy, descent, and hypertrophy — is central to understanding aesthetic volume changes and planning filler placement. Editors working with anatomy-based treatment protocols or clinical anatomy papers must verify that compartment names are used precisely and are not used interchangeably with deep fat compartments. The term is distinct from 'subcutaneous fat' in that it implies a specific anatomically bounded unit rather than the general tissue layer.
