blue toe syndrome

Clinical condition characterized by sudden onset of painful, cyanotic digits due to distal embolization from proximal arterial sources.

Full Definition

Blue toe syndrome is a clinical entity characterized by the acute onset of painful, blue or purple discoloration of one or more toes in the presence of palpable pedal pulses. This paradoxical combination of digital ischemia with adequate proximal circulation typically results from atheroembolism or thromboembolism from upstream arterial sources, such as abdominal aortic aneurysms, iliac artery plaques, or cardiac sources. The condition is also known as 'trash foot' when multiple emboli cause more extensive digital necrosis. Diagnosis requires identification and treatment of the embolic source to prevent recurrent episodes and potential limb loss.
