duplex ultrasonography
Non-invasive imaging technique combining B-mode ultrasound with Doppler flow assessment for vascular evaluation.
Full Definition
Duplex ultrasonography is a comprehensive non-invasive imaging modality that combines real-time B-mode ultrasound imaging with pulsed Doppler spectral analysis and color flow mapping. This technique allows simultaneous visualization of vessel anatomy and assessment of blood flow dynamics, including velocity measurements, flow direction, and turbulence detection. In angiology, duplex ultrasonography is the first-line imaging study for evaluating carotid stenosis, peripheral arterial disease, and venous disorders, offering excellent diagnostic accuracy without radiation exposure or contrast agents.
Usage
Usage note: Distinguish from simple Doppler studies which assess flow without anatomical imaging.
