Full Definition

A hypercoagulable state, also known as thrombophilia, refers to an increased predisposition to develop venous or arterial thrombosis due to inherited genetic mutations or acquired conditions that affect the coagulation system. Inherited causes include factor V Leiden, prothrombin gene mutation, protein C or S deficiency, and antithrombin deficiency. Acquired causes encompass antiphospholipid syndrome, malignancy, pregnancy, oral contraceptives, and prolonged immobilization. Recognition of hypercoagulable states is crucial for determining appropriate anticoagulation duration and preventing recurrent thrombotic events.

Usage note: Thrombophilia is the more formal medical term; hypercoagulable state is more descriptive for patient education.
