percutaneous transluminal angioplasty

Also written as: PTA — percutaneous transluminal angioplasty

Minimally invasive endovascular procedure using balloon catheter inflation to restore vessel patency in stenotic or occluded arteries.

Full Definition

Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) is a catheter-based interventional procedure performed to treat arterial stenosis or occlusion through balloon inflation within the vessel lumen. The procedure involves advancing a deflated balloon catheter across the stenotic lesion and inflating it to compress atherosclerotic plaque against the vessel wall, thereby restoring luminal diameter and improving blood flow. PTA can be performed alone or in combination with stent placement, and is commonly used to treat peripheral arterial disease, renal artery stenosis, and other vascular conditions.

Usage

Usage note: Full form preferred in formal documentation; PTA acceptable in established context.
