The detailed structural analysis of atherosclerotic plaques, including composition (lipid core, fibrous cap, calcification), surface characteristics (smooth, irregular, ulcerated), and vulnerability features that determine risk of rupture or embolization. Advanced imaging techniques such as intravascular ultrasound, optical coherence tomography, and near-infrared spectroscopy allow detailed assessment of plaque morphology to guide treatment decisions and risk stratification in patients with coronary and peripheral arterial disease.
