The aortic diameter index is a calculated measurement that normalizes aortic diameter measurements to patient body surface area, typically expressed as cm/m². This index is particularly important in pediatric and young adult populations where absolute diameter measurements may not accurately reflect the severity of aortic dilatation. The index helps standardize surgical indications across different patient sizes and is especially valuable in conditions like Marfan syndrome where aortic dimensions relative to body size are more clinically relevant than absolute measurements. Different aortic segments (root, ascending, arch) may have different normal index values, and cutoff values for intervention are typically lower than absolute diameter criteria.
