Aortic flow reversal refers to the backward direction of blood flow within the aorta during ventricular diastole, most commonly occurring as a result of aortic valve regurgitation. This phenomenon can be detected using Doppler ultrasound, MRI flow studies, or invasive pressure measurements. The degree and extent of flow reversal correlate with the severity of aortic regurgitation and can extend into the abdominal aorta in severe cases. Documentation of flow reversal patterns helps assess hemodynamic significance and guide therapeutic decisions.
