Aortic impedance mismatch refers to the hemodynamic consequences that occur when prosthetic graft material with different elastic properties is interposed in the aortic circulation. Native aortic tissue has specific compliance characteristics that help dampen pressure waves and optimize cardiac efficiency through the Windkessel effect. When rigid prosthetic materials replace compliant aortic tissue, altered wave reflection patterns can increase afterload, reduce coronary perfusion, and affect left ventricular function.
